Offered for your consideration is an unused in box pair of vintage ACUTEX MTS-1W speakers, manufactured in Japan c.1982. For those unfamiliar with the brand, which includes me till recently, ACUTEX was a 1980’s audio importer which entered the compact speaker market ushered-in several years earlier by the Braun/ADS L200 and L300, Visonik’s DAVID 302 and 502, and the most famous of their imitators, the Realistic Minimus 7 and 7W. ACUTEX evidently contracted the same company in Japan that built the Minimus 7 for the Tandy Corporation because these speakers are practically identical to the walnut-encased Realistic Minimus 7W. They differ only in the MTS-1W having sturdy binding post input terminals instead of common spring tabs and a 1¼” dome tweeter with wave guide instead of the regular 1” dome. Otherwise, the MTS-1W is a dead-ringer for the Japanese-made Realistic Cat. No. 40-2039A Minimus 7W. So, please take a look at my large photos, the specifications image, and read the remaining description to decide if these time-capsule fresh ACUTEX speakers should join your collection. The ACUTEX MTS-1W measure 8” tall by 5” wide by 4” deep (not including the grille protrusion) which is identical to the Minimus 7W. I found the above specifications in the AUDIO Magazine Annual Equipment Directory of 1982, and they have the measurements misprinted as the same for the MTS-1W as its slightly smaller, all-metal sibling, the MTS-1. What’s more, ACUTEX speakers were not found in the 1983 AUDIO Directory, so I suspect this company was short-lived which makes these splendid Minimus 7W clones all the more scarce and practically impossible to find as unused “collector old stock.” Also, take note of the retail price of $129.00 each. This pair of ACUTEX MTS-1W is in clean, pristine condition. I actually un-taped the plastic bags seen in the first picture above to take the remaining photos, so the speakers are as new as 40 years old can be! Also, I saved those protective tan paper banners surrounding the real walnut veneer and will, of course, reapply them to the enclosures with the plastic bags and styrofoam bracing ends. However, I did notice that one cabinet has two very small blemish areas on one side panel, as pictured directly below, which were evidently too minor to raise an eyebrow with quality control at the manufacturer. A drop of matte tung oil or urethane finish on a Q-tip will make them vanish. Otherwise, folks, these speakers are perfection! And, since I have owned many pairs of the near identical Realistic Minimus 7W, and know how great they sound, I saw no need to audition these never-used speakers. As I stated earlier, the MTS-1W have a dome tweeter that’s ¼” larger in diameter on the same metal faceplate as the 1” SD-13 in the Minimus 7W, and the same #1218 4” rubber surround woofer as well. As such, the new owner will be the one christening these fine speakers! Lastly, the factory box is included, as pictured, and has an error on the printed specs. Namely, they call the tweeter a 1” dome instead of the larger 1¼” dome it is, and that the AUDIO magazine test specs confirm, which is understandable when its also misprinted on the back of the speakers. And, I imagine the speakers came with some paperwork when purchased but it was not in the box when they came into my possession. So, if you’re a fan of the Minimus 7W, here is the opportunity to own a pair of unused in the box variants that are just a little bit nicer. You will have a pair of collectible speakers that just about nobody else does, especially in this condition. Yes, these are the real deal!As pictured and described, this superb pair of ACUTEX MTS-1W is offered at a price which reflects their scarcity. Plus, I have no way of knowing in what manner the speakers will be used, the condition or power rating of the equipment they’ll be connected to, or what level of audio experience the new owner has. What’s more, I will not fall prey to a “parts switching” scheme of any sort which, unfortunately, happens on eBay with some frequency. Lastly, I pack items very securely, and full insurance coverage will be included in the shipping/handling cost.
