The Player was modified extensively and its key modification is tube output stage fitted directly on the original dac board of the player. This modification was made to improve sound quality. General condition The player is in good cosmetic and fully working condition. Its mechanism is working silently and is stable in operation, reads all CD and CD-R with random access in less than 3 sec. The player is supplied with its original remote control and quality mains cable, in original packaging as shown in pictures. Short technical description. Excellent quality Arcam Alpha 5 is a classical audiophile player made with the very best parts available at its time - the famous TDA 1541a DAC, possibly the most musical dac chip ever and equally famous Philips CDM 9 swing arm laser mechanism, the perfect technical match to the dac.Model 5 PLUS has some significant improvements, central of them is DATA reclock suppressing jitter and improving sonic performance even further. The player is reputed not only for its original high sound capabilities, but as well as object to many successful upgrades, leading to even better sonic performance. The original DAC board of the player was modified extensively, in particular aged electrolytic capacitors are replaced with much better quality ones - Rubycon Black Gate , polypropylene ones in dac domain, Panasonic FC for power reservoirs - all these upgrades are well developed and proven to be effective for sonic improvements. Key modification is the tube output stage. It is made by replacement of operational amplifiers with valve based output stage . Tubes are 6S31B Russian subminiature output triodes, probably the best miniature output tubes, capable for low output impedance and very low noise and distortions. Tube stage is made with high quality components as well, like audiophile grade polypropylene output capacitors. These tubes are so compact that allows to be fitted on the original dac board without any changes in architecture of the player. As we mentioned tis player equipped originally with DATA bus reclock and this made this model one of the best ever realization of 1541a DAC. ARCAM ALPHA 5 CD Player with NET AUDIO NON OVERSAMPLING upgrade kit fitted.I have had this for many years and upgraded to Non Oversampling with a kit from Net Audio in 2011 at a cost of £140. Details of the upgrade kit changes can be seen on the relevant pictureS of the Net Audio receipt. The sound improved the standard Alpha 5 player significantly. It is playing Annie Lennox right now and she sounds beautifull! The NOS upgrade elevates the sound to a more natural analogue presentation than most CD players.Cosmetically the player is very good with very few scuffs and marks given its age. The display is slightly dim but completely readable and the original remote is included. On the downside the open/close gearing doesnt operate and needs replacing, a common situation with these players. Parts are still available if you want to fix it however I have been opening and closing the tray manually since the malfunction occurred a couple of years ago. There is a piece of tape attached to the front of the tray with which to pull it open and you simply push it after loading your CD to close.I would prefer collection on this as I have had problems sending delicate audio items by post in the past. I live in Crawley West Sussex.
