Skullcandy, as their name suggests, are all about cool and street style, and this speaker was designed with the hiphop fans and ravers in mind - in this particular version, theyve replaced the original all-black exterior - which I rather liked: it looked like it belonged in the blast furnace at Fiorina Fury 161 in Alien 3 (which is a massively under-rated film, incidentally). This ones a special edition, designed in conjunction with the Harold Hunter Foundation - the New York charity started in memory of the professional skater who died in 2006, and which raises money to provide skating facilities to youth groups in the city, which means its in a special shell with a black and white street scene depicting Hunter skateboarding down the middle of the road. Back to the sound quality. We tested it with Squarepushers Dark Steering, Ruby My Dears The Dreaming Tree, Orbitals Keine Trink Wasser and, because we were in the mood for some mad stuff, Squirrel Nut Zippers Ghost Of Stephen Foster. In all cases, performance was more than satisfactory - as already pointed out, its not hi-fi quality and no portable speaker is, but if youve only experienced cheap models before youll like this one. Provided, that is, you dont want to listen to bass-heavy stuff at full volume - everythings acceptable up to about 75%, but theres notable distortion if things get bassy and higher than that and, despite the rubber armour doing a good job of isolating the device from whatever its sitting on, a fair bit of rattling around too. Fortunately, its a lot louder than most similar speakers - 75% is plenty loud enough most of the time, and kept within its limits it offers decent, crisp sound right across the audible stage. Build quality is superb - that rattling is entirely due to the small size and light weight of the device, not anything shaking about inside. There are four rivets on the front, one with a little skull on it just in case you forgot to look at the logo on top to remind you its a Skullcandy product, presumably there to hold the twin speakers firmly in place, and whatever the shell is made of seems pretty tough. The rubber casing, which extends all the way across the top, down the back and along the bottom, is thick enough to absorb a hefty jolt if its dropped, and the device is water proof too. I like the sturdy loop on one end so you can hang it on...well, whatever you want, but probably not your belt because the speaker isnt it. This one has been used and there are some light scuffs to the rubber as a result - but these are minor and entirely cosmetic, having no affect on use at all (and the rubber can be removed for proper washing). Otherwise, its all in full working order - it connected via Bluetooth with no problems and played fine with a stereo line-in too. The one thing we cant guarantee, due to not knowing how many times its been charged, is that the built-in battery will achieve the full 11 hours continual use promised by the manufacturer when it was new - but it managed seven hours without issue.
