Goldring GL1042 Moving Magnet Cartridge. I would estimate 150 hours of use on this stylus before I changed to a 2400. As can be seen from the microscope pictures the stylus & cantilever remain in very good condition. The 1000 series have a highly deserved reputation and the 1042 certainly didnt disappoint as top of the range. Somewhat warmer in presentation than the 2400 replaced it with, they both are very musical cartridges and it certainly doesnt deserve to sit in a box in a cupboard. The stylus on this one is probably half-way through its expected life, having been in use by me from new for about a year so there is plenty of mileage for you to enjoy. A new G1042 stylus can be purchased by around £200 and a complete cartridge is at least £325 – so obtaining this part-used one does represent decent value! You can however use any of the Goldring G1000 styli with this cartridge body, so you can spend a far smaller budget for a replacement if required - or go for the top-of-the-range G1042 Gyger-S. It’s only been used on my Roksan Xerxes 20 Plus turntable - it’s a wonderful performer as you’d expect on a good turntable, with the excellent Gyger-S stylus tracking brilliantly at around 1.8 Grams.
