This NAD 3140 has been upgraded and custom retrofitted to eliminate the thermal issues that plagued this model throughout its production. There are overheating 2-watt resistors in the preamp power supply that bake (and prematurely deteriorate) the surrounding purple electrolytic caps to a golden brown. I have relocated these resistors on terminal strips above and away from the other components. See the last photo. A second set of overheating resistors that supply the front panel LEDs (of all things!) has been eliminated by upgrading the ancient LEDs with much lower power versions. The soft clipping circuit has been updated to the latest Zener diode version (per the Service Bulletin) but with four 1 watt zeners instead of two 1/2 watt zeners to reduce the overheating that was occurring in that area as well. I have installed four Banana Jack/Binding Posts for SPEAKER_A in addition to the original Spring Terminals. The standard 3/4 spacing accommodates paired plugs. I have replaced ALL of the electrolytic capacitors. The four 4700uF Main Caps have been upgraded from 50V to 63V since they are actually charging up to 51V in this unit (NAD was notorious for this). The other power supply caps have been upgraded to higher voltage and/or 105C temp ratings. The audio caps have been upgraded to ELNA, nichicon MUSE BP, FW, and Fine Gold Audio as well as Vishay Film in the Bass_EQ and Control amps. I also replaced many of the 0.1 disc caps that were looking old and baked and worn with new multi-layer ceramics. I have upgraded the 4 very sensitive Bias and Offset adjustments to multi-turn trimpots. They allow a more precise adjustment that is less likely to drift or be accidentally disturbed. I have cleaned the switches with Deoxit D5 and cleaned/lubed the pots with Deoxit Fader F5. Cosmetically, this unit is in good condition. It has a few scrapes on the top cover and the front panel. It is rated at twice the RMS power (40 WPC), has two phono inputs, two source selection switches (listen and record), two Bass_EQ contours, two tape loops, two sets of speaker outputs, two led power meters, and even two power transformers that are wired in series to behave as one massive chunk of iron. All that combined with over twice the Main Capacitance provides a Dynamic Power IHF rating of 80 WPC at 8 ohms, 130 WPC at 4 ohms, and 160 WPC at 2 ohms. The 3140 is an all-discrete design. The sophisticated 7-transistor MM/MC Phono Preamp has both Phono_1 and Phono_2 input jacks DC coupled to an FET gate with no coupling capacitor. A very unique feature of the 3140 is its 5-transistor 12db BASS_EQ Amplifier stage that can be selected to extend the low frequency response of almost any speaker by an octave centered around 45 Hz (Tower Speakers) or 70 Hz (Bookshelf Speakers). While the additional demands on the power amplifier can be significant, this amp can deliver. Another unique feature is the S.L.C. or Speaker Lead Compensation feedback in the Power Amplifier. It is meant to compensate for long and/or light gauge speaker wire, but I find it pleasing under all conditions, and usually leave it on. NOTE: Unlike most power amplifiers, the 3140 connects to all Speakers as if in a bridged configuration. The Negative Speaker terminals are NOT common ground. They are actually the S.L.C. feedback for each channel.

Deoxit switches and potentiometers. Resolder RCA, DIN, and Headphone jacks to reseat and resecure them, along with any other questionable solder joints. Re Cap - Replace the Electrolytic Capacitors in the Power Supplies, Amplifier sections, and Tuner Audio sections. Ill upgrade the audio caps with nichicon, ELNA, Rubycon, and Panasonic audio grades while preferring 105C and/or higher voltage rated caps for the power supplies. I can also install any capacitors that you provide as desired. Note that replacing the power switch is an additional $35. If you hear a sizzling sound as you slowly push it on or off, then its time to replace it. International units at 220VAC are no problem. Who knew what power and sophistication lurked within the modest confines of the NAD 3125! It is clearly a Proton in disguise, with the telltale Power Transformer (last photo) and overall elegance of design. Schematically, the 3125 contains a Souped Up version of the original 3020 Power Amp design with Higher Voltage Main Rails and TWICE the Main Capacitance of the original 3020, 3020x and 3220PE spinoffs, as well as its own 7125 Receiver. Who knew? My favorite feature is the Bass EQ contour that extends the low end of almost any speaker by taking advantage of this High Power/Current capability. This is the second 3125 Ive serviced, both of which had many original ELNA Electrolytic caps that tested really bad, as in open or as a high value resistor. I have upgraded the Power Supply caps to nichicon, Panasonic, TDK and Chemicon. The 4 Main Caps are NIC. A single transistor Line Input Buffer and low noise OP-AMP design allows for unusually low value audio coupling and filter capacitors. As such, I have upgraded 3 pairs of Electrolytic audio coupling caps with Metal Film for non-polar operation and better performance. The other audio coupling pairs have been upgraded to Philips, ELNA BP, and nichicon MUSE BP. I have also upgraded the Power Amp Bias and Offset adjustments to multi-turn trimmers which are more precise and less likely to drift. I have re-soldered the rear RCA jacks, the front switches, controls, and headphone jack, and much of the main board itself. I then cleaned the solder side with Flux Remover and Alcohol. It looks better than new. The input select switches were showing signs of physical aging and deterioration, so I reinforced them with cable ties and several coats of craft glue. They are now as strong as ever. The original AC power plug has also been replaced, as the old one just looked shabby. Cosmetically, this unit is is very good condition with surface scratches here and there. Please see photos. The top cover and front panel are a single metal piece. The funky plastic side panels could easily be replaced by nice, stained wood panels, etc. Full refund within 60 days. Buyer pays return shipping. This is a really nice example of the NAD 3120. The NAD 3120 is the Audiophile upgrade of the 3020 series 20 including an MM/MC Phono input. Original RCA MJ2955/ 2N3055 power transistors still present. This amplifier has an clean front panel with just minor blemishes. Casing in very good condition too. Input connectors are 24 Carat Gold plated ! Speaker connectors are banana 4mm binding posts on this model Amp totally cleaned inside. Volume potentiometer (Split balance type) has been serviced and works perfectly with no crackles. ALL of the Electrolytic capacitors have been replaced including larger Power supply Filter capacitors. It is imperative that these are all changed. Old electrolytic capacitors of 40 years+ are EOL and will fail. Power supply Filter caps replaced too. New multi-turn trimpots installed for Amp idle bias adjustment. DC offset and bias have been correctly set. Original RCA MJ2055/ 2N3055 output transistors remounted on new Silicon thermal transfer pads, replacing old dried mica insulator/ thermal compound. All Solder joints checked. This amplifier has a truly stunning sound quality guaranteed to impress. Suprisingly loud ! I am selling this model NAD 3130 amplifier in excellent refurbished condition. Please view the photographs carefully. Conservatively rated at 30 watts/channel and with the excellent and renowned pre-amp for vinyl reproduction. Everything works as it should. The front fascia is in excellent condition with ‘sharp’ corners and clear graphics. The internals are free from dust, rust and corrosion. The PCB, professionally cleaned, is visible in my picture of ‘under the hood’. There are a few minor marks to the top cover. The amp, fully repaired, serviced and re-calibrated with matching power transistors refitted to the heatsink over new heat-transfer pads to both channels to replace defective transistors and to preserve the fabulous NAD sound whilst improving thermal stability. The center volts and quiescent current parameters have adjusted to exact original factory settings: new multi-turn trim pots installed for precise setting of quiescent current. Other pots and switches are cleaned and lubricated so are smooth and silent in operation. The amp is completely original apart from the heat-transfer pads and replaced transistors mentioned earlier. It sounds as it should – musical and controlled. Typically NAD with soft-clipping to prevent damage to loudspeakers when over-driven. Has switchable facility for the vinyl user with MM and MC (low output) cartridges, and includes a selectable rumble filter (INFRA DEFEAT) for turntable filtering so ideal for the vinyl user with a less than perfect turntable.
