This model is well known among many classic radio enthusiasts, an outstanding technical achievement by the German radio giant Siemens. It took advantage of the very early roll-out in 1949 of high-fidelity VHF/FM broadcasting in West Germany, the country a European leader in this new technology. So it was that Siemens launched the very first FM pocket personal radio in their RT-10 as here for sale in 1960. Before integrated circuits and microchips, it was still a near miracle that they managed to pack all the new FM circuitry into a small plastic case only 150 x 90 x 50mm (4 x 3.5 x 2 inches) and as a bonus include normal MW/LW AM bands. The radio for sale is complete with no missing parts, original and unmodified. The fact that it still has ( see photos) the original clips for the long-obsolete original Petrix 29 battery shows that it was probably just taken out of service when the batteries became unobtainable about twenty years ago (though conversion to a modern PP3 would have been relatively simple.) But the cosmetic condition is now very poor as the photos show, probably due to poor storage. Both the brown leatherette covering and the cream plastic of the case itself have unsightly ingrained dirt which may well require specialist treatment to remove. And there is damage to the case in two places ( photos.) The first is cracking around the screw for the rear cover. The second is a flake broken away ( but still present) along the bottom of the dial. Electrically there are also problems. On the plus side, there is no evidence at all of repairs or modifications. The on/off/volume switch functions normally, as does the 3-position band selector and also the main tuning/dial needle. When powered up from a 9 volt supply, there is some crackling from the speaker and some very faint audio. But if the power is suddenly interrupted and re-applied, if the tuned to a strong AM station, there is then a brief burst of loud, clear audio for 1-2 seconds, then only a whisper, probably indicating capacitor problems. As to accessories, the shoulder strap ( which is also the main FM antenna) is present and in good condition and even the original guarantee! The plastic display/storage case is also very dirty but undamaged. However there are two internal cracks in the top of the perspex dome and I was able to photograph the larger of the two. So possibly restorable if the cosmetic side can be dealt with, maybe with specialist help.If you visit the Radio Museum rm.org model page, there is a forum link to restoration advice. The circuitry is relatively simple by modern standards and full circuit diagrams are on RM. The radio uses mostly easily obtainable standard 1960s era components (or in some cases suitable modern equivalents.) The radio weighs on its own 600g and the parcel weight will be around 850g. It will be packed very well in an oversize box with plenty of soft infill to protect the aged plastic from any further damage. Sold without reserve.
