The Sony TA-ZH1ES Signature Series Headphone Amplifier/DAC is a high-quality and versatile device that includes a DSD Remastering Engine with FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) that can convert all PCM music sources into DSD at 11.2MHz, the option to upsample lower-quality sound files with Sony’s proprietary DSEE HX (Digital Sound Enhancement Engine HX) technology and support for hi-res audio up to PCM 32 bit 768 kHz or DSD 22.4 MHz. Headphone connections include XLR4 and 4.4mm balanced, plus 3.5 mm and 6.3 mm standard and there are high and low gain options, which have slightly different sound profiles and are both worth trying out, even if it doesn’t seem like you “need” high gain, as I can understand why somebody might prefer either one. Since I mostly used the balanced headphone connections, I had no functional reason for choosing high gain, but I was surprised to find that, despite this, I had a minor-but-definite preference for high gain on the TA-ZH1ES. The TA-ZH1ES will be packed in the original box with the remote, power cord, USB cable, unused headphone cable (3.5 mm with 6.5 mm adapter), unused cleaning cloth and the instruction booklet. However, I don’t have the digital Walkman port cable that also comes with the item when it’s new. I did a quick Google search and found that a replacement for the Walkman port cable can be purchased for $46 on a Sony affiliated website. Because this TA-ZH1ES is missing the digital Walkman port cable and it has indications of use normal for a pre-owned item—(although this is only visible when looking at it closely and not noticeable from a normal distance, at least to me)—I’m offering it at a lower-than-usual price. Along with photos I’ve attached that show the TA-ZH1ES from a variety of standard angles, I’ve also included close-up photos that clearly show its most noticeable imperfection, which is a very small dent or “ding” in the right-front corner that has no impact on functionality or sound. This was present when I bought the item used and I only notice it when looking directly at the corner from very close up. Although, it seems unlikely to me that most people would place the TA-ZH1ES in a location or at a distance where this was even noticeable during regular use, I’ve included two photos of this corner (with a dime placed on top of the TA-ZH1ES, next to the corner, to show the size/scale of this imperfection as precisely as possible), so that potential buyers can clearly see what it looks like from up close for themselves. The Sony TA-ZH1ES Signature Series Headphone Amplifier/DAC is a high-quality and versatile device that includes the following: A DSD Remastering Engine with FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) that can convert all PCM music sources into DSD at 11.2MHz The option to upsample lower-quality sound files with Sony’s proprietary DSEE HX (Digital Sound Enhancement Engine HX) technology, which works by analyzing the audio and then restoring some of the high-frequency information that might have been lost during the compression process. It supports hi-res audio up to PCM 32 bit 768 kHz or DSD 22.4 MHz. Headphone connections include XLR4 and 4.4mm balanced, plus 3.5 mm and 6.3 mm standard. There are high and low gain options and they are both worth trying out, even if it doesn’t seem like you “need” to use high gain, as the gain settings sound slightly different from each other and I can understand why somebody might prefer either one. Since I mostly used the balanced headphone connections, I was never close to “needing” to use high gain, but I was surprised to find that I still had a minor-but-definite preference for how the TA-ZH1ES sounded when I used high gain. The TA-ZH1ES will be packed in the original box with the remote, power cord, USB cable, unused headphone cable (3.5 mm with 6.5 mm adapter), unused cleaning cloth and the instruction booklet. However, I don’t have the digital Walkman port cable that also comes with the item when it’s new. I did a quick Google search and found that a replacement for the Walkman port cable can be purchased for $46 on a Sony affiliated website. Because this TA-ZH1ES is missing the digital Walkman port cable and it has indications of use normal for a pre-owned item—(although this is only visible close up and not noticeable from a normal distance, at least to me)—I’m offering it at a lower-than-usual price. Along with the regular photos I’ve included from different angles, I’ve also included a close-up photo that clearly shows the most noticeable imperfection, a small paint chip/dent in the right-front corner.
