Offered is a quartet of Xf4 type EL34s, Philips and Valvo branded but all made in UK by Mullard Blackburn, between 1975 and 1980.Pentodes were invented by Philips; the Xf4 type made in Blackburn was the pinnacle of the British EL34’s saga and the last model to be manufactured by the Philips-Mullard-Valvo group. Due to its stapled plate, it has the same musicality but it’s a little less tolerant to overheating and it asks for a little more attention in biasing, respect to the classic Xf2. Nevertheless, thanks to both its higher and lower mica spacers whose four dents directly couple with the glass envelope, its structure minimizes noises and feedbacks in the high power guitar and bass amplifiers, that is the main application they were intended for, during the late seventies.Tubes show full halo getters and they were positively tested for emissions, transconductances and grid currents with a Metrix U61B: two tubes had been previously overheated for a short time, but they passed all the functionality tests. A stability and sound quality test was also performed on a Marshall guitar head amp.
