M c I n t o s h MC 2250 Stereo Power Amplifier250 250 Watt Per Channel prod. 1982 - 1988 1 out of only 499 units! This stereo amplifier is a serious piece of audio equipment. It is by far the most powerful amp that my home entertainment center has ever seen. The unit is about the size of an original XBOX, just alittle taller, but the MC 2250 weighs approx. 80 pounds! Ill include more detailed specs and information below, but in terms of my own experience with the unit; Sound: Exceptionally True, Full Resolution, Wide Soundstage with impressive seperation of vocals and bass, playback stays precise at low & high levels----no clipping or lagging or distortion whatsoever. Just smooth & powerful. Machine operates DEAD SILENT too! Physical Condition: Overall very good - great appearance. There are some hairline scratches and stubburn brushed-marks, and then theres maybe half a dozen more noticeable scratchesmarkings. Original Printed TextLettering is 96% Unscathed & Fully Legible, meaning less than 5% of the textlettering has been lost to time. Faceplate has one slightly bent corner, see photos, which is unfortunately not all that uncommon to see with heavy units like these. Interior is clean and well kept, wires kept tidy, surfaces shiny and connections secure. Metal frames and housings have very-very little to no rust at all. The photos should illustrate better than my words! ISSUE: The Red Light. Turn on the unit, and immediately the automatic system test sounds the alarm, (optional toggle off or on) indicates that there is something awry with The Left Channel (System Test code #3 blinks for a few seconds, it is faint, old bulb). Turn off the unit, wait a few moments and power it up again to find the same test code flashes, lighting up the red indicator for the left channel. HOWEVER, both channels are fully functioning and neither channel is operating differently than the other, if that makes sense. The left channel in this instance should be dead and or operate within a limited range, and the right channel should then sound significantly loudermore dynamic, simply in contrast to the left. But this is NOT the case. Fortunately, both left and right channels operate as they should, at low & high levels all the same. Unfortunately, there is a red light present alongside the normal green light. My guess is the left channel limit indicator has a faulty connection somewhere andor the corresponding IC chip (integrated circuit) component just needs to be replaced...or ignored! Stereo Fixers, Inc. will Professionally Pack the unit for Shipping with Full Value Insurance (a $150 value) If youre not familiar with this particular McIntosh Power Amp, here is some additional information we were able to gather from the internet: The McIntosh Mc2200 is a Stereo Power Amplifier with a unique power guard circuit, equivalent to the MC2205 (without power meters.) Distortion is eliminated by using a low-noise monolithic transistor differential amplifier at the input side of the power amplifier circuit, which provides both input and feedback signals. The next stage circuit is a voltage amplifier circuit with Class-A operation. The driver circuit and complimentary service circuit are designed to operate close to Class-A to reduce crossover distortion. The circuit is always designed to be moderately biased against changes in temperature. The power transistor is Class AB operation and the bias current is secured by a thermistor. The output-stage employs a single-ended para-push method and consists of six highly reliable complimentary service power transistors. Since this circuit is a balanced emitter-follower connection, it has outstanding stability and low distortion. Moreover, the unique output-bias circuit realizes Class B operation without crossover distortion. The output signal of the MC2200 passes through an output transformer, which is designed to match the output terminal of any impedance so that the maximum output is obtained for all frequency signals regardless of the output terminal. This transformer also protects the speakers in the event of an amplifier failure. When a DC component is mixed into the output, the transformer eliminates the component and prevents damage to the speakers. To prevent overloading of the output transistor, the output signal is always monitored by a McIntosh proprietary monitoring circuit. This circuit becomes high impedance when the output level exceeds the rated value, but this has no effect on the output. When the output reaches its maximum value, the monitoring circuit limits the signal supplied to the output transistor to prevent shorting of the output of the amplifier or damage to the output transistor. This monitoring circuit monitors the plus and minus sides of the output signal separately. In order to improve the stability and sound quality of reproduced sound, it is equipped with a Power Guard System which is a unique new circuit. In this circuit, the Normal (green) and Limit (red) lamps on the front panel are operated by a waveform comparison circuit unique to McIntosh. This circuit electrically compares the output waveform with the input waveform, and when the difference between them becomes 0.5%, the Limit lamp turns on and the Normal lamp turns off. When the difference reaches 1%, the Power Guard Circuit operates to prevent clipping of the amplifier preventing distortion from being reproduced from the speaker, while at the same time protecting the speaker. In this case, the amplifier still exhibits the rated maximum output. The input waveform and the output waveform are compared by an IC differential amplifier, and the waveform difference due to distortion of the output waveform is converted into a voltage. This voltage is amplified approximately 100 times supplied to a Schmidt Trigger Circuit through a full-wave rectifier circuit. The Limit Lamp also lights up when the amp is overloaded. Even if the overload condition is very short, the lamp remains on for a period of time that is sufficiently visible. In this case, the meter displays less than 200W. Again, the voltage obtained from the waveform difference is used. If the voltage becomes higher than the level that turns on the Limit Lamp, the Power Guard Circuit is activated. When using a Power Guard Circuit, set the power guard switch on the rear panel to the Normal Position. When this switch is in the out position, only the Limit Lamp operates.
