The SMSL VMV D3 is a high-end R2R DAC that uses four PCM1704U-J chips, a balanced design and an isolated power supply. It supports up to 32-bit 768khz and native DSD 512. This model normally retails for $3499 new and the lowest price currently available that I found in a quick online search was $3149. Since mine is used, of course I’m selling it for much less that that. However, it hasn’t given me any problems since I bought it used but in like-new condition from TMR Audio a little over a year ago—it still works and looks great and I’ll pack it in the original box, with the same packing materials used by TMR when they sent it to me. The only (very) minor issue I’ve had with this DAC is that I couldn’t get the included remote to work. I bought a generic SMSL remote as a replacement and this replacement remote has worked for me without any problems ever since. I’ll include both we the working replacement remote and the original remote with the DAC. There are 5 input options: USB, Digital Coaxial RCA, Digital Optical TOSLINK, AES/EBU and I2S. There’s also an option to use an external clock, if desired, although it already comes with an internal clock system that’s very good. I’ve mostly connected the USB input directly into my MacBook or Mac Mini, but I’ve also used the other inputs via a Singxer SU-6 DDC. The SMSL VMV D3 includes 2 audio output options, Digital Coaxial RCA and XLR, both of which I’ve tested recently and found to be working fine. As with most higher-end DACs, it’s expected that the user will provide their own cables, so only a generic USB cable (still unopened) was included in the package when I bought it.
