You can hook up to 5 speakers plus a pre-amplified subwoofer to it, or you can use it with just two speakers hooked up like a stereo without Surround Sound. If you just want to just use two speakers, press the button that says 2CH Stereo and youre good to go. But later, if you want to expand the system and add the other 3 speakers and maybe a pre-amplified subwoofer, then you can play it in Surround Sound. 80 watts per channel is plenty enough to drive a nice set of large speakers.
