The 101M is Yamahas top-of-the-line stereo power amplifier with the enormous power and toughness of a studio amplifier without sacrificing the precision and high quality of an audio amplifier. The 101M incorporates two monaural amplifiers in a single unit, and has a complete twin monaural configuration, with the left and right channels independent from the AC power cord. This makes it possible to use only one channel and leave the other channel turned off, eliminating mutual interference and other harmful interference.The overall layout and wiring patterns are also designed to be perfectly symmetrical, with the micro-power section on the upper side and the high-power section on the lower side, and the signal flow from the front panel to the rear panel where the power transistors of the final stage are lined up. The power stage is a new concept including the power supply circuit to supply the full power with low distortion, and the Yamaha ZDR (zero distortion circuit) achieves high output power and low distortion.The power transistors are in a metal can case of Pc200W, 10 paras (20 transistors) per channel in total, and based on 5 paras of ±70V operation, 4 paras of ±120V are added as needed in a flexible configuration. Therefore, while the power stage as a whole has a ±120V high-voltage operating capability, the individual power Trs do not need to be constantly operated, and the ±70V side 5 paras do not saturate, and the ±120V side 4 paras also do not need to be constantly operated. The power stage is equipped with ZDR (Zero Distortion Rule), which eliminates all distortion in the power stage. Crossover distortion common in the power stage, thermal distortion and distortion caused by speaker back EMFs peculiar to music signal amplification are also cancelled to achieve low distortion. In the power supply section, the main power supply for the power stage and the sub-power supplies for the other stages are separated in order to improve reliability under high current and high voltage amplitude conditions.The main power supply provides ±70 V and ±120 V according to the configuration of the power stage, and a real-time power supply control circuit adds additional voltage as needed to achieve excellent power supply capability.The power transformer is a large transformer weighing approximately 10 kg, which uses an Orient core with excellent magnetic characteristics and windings made of ultra-thick oxygen-free copper wire with a diameter of 2 mm, realizing a primary-side DC resistance as low as 0.35 ? and enabling a large power supply.The power supply section uses 2 paras (4 units) of 100V 18,000?F and 1 para (2 units) of 63V 39,000?F. The total capacity of the power stage chemistors used in one 101M unit reaches 300,000?F. To protect the speaker from accidental damage, a protection circuit is provided.The DC detection protection detects DC output and turns off the speaker relay when there is a DC input outside the DC servo range. The high-frequency detection protection turns off the speaker relay in the event of high-frequency large amplitude exceeding the 100 kHz full power range.In addition, a muting circuit is provided that turns off the speaker relay for 5 seconds after power-on and simultaneously activates the 70 Apeak inrush protection circuit.When these three protection circuits are activated, the protection LED lights and warns. A Pc limiter is provided to detect a continuous load short circuit according to the output current and voltage conditions and to protect the transistor by changing the operating curve of the Pc limiter when a load short circuit occurs. With the operation mode switch on the rear panel, it can also be used as a monaural amplifier with BTL connection.
