Very clean amp, but not perfect. The front panel is very nice. The sides have scratches. Still very presentable. It is working perfectly fine as is. It was recently checked and bench tested. The GFA-555 remained in the Adcom line until recently, when the company upgraded it to the GFA-555II, which is almost identical to the original but has several new construction and circuit features designed to enhance its performance. To reduce the amplifier’s already low distortion even further, the grounding system for its inputs has been changed to isolate them from the grounded sides of the speaker outputs. The basic circuitry of the amplifier has also been modified slightly to drive reactive loads with lower distortion. Other differences between the original and new versions of the amplifier involve small details that individually may not make an appreciable change in its performance but collectively constitute a distinct refinement. For example, the gold-plated input phono jacks now have Teflon insulation, and the internal point-to-point wiring uses oxygen-free copper (OFC) wire. A red led on the front of the amplifier glows when the thermal-protection circuit has shut it down, and the DC power-supply fuses, formerly inside the amplifier, are now on the rear so that they can be replaced more easily. The output-transistor heat sinks that occupy most of the rear apron are now larger, for better cooling, and have rounded corners to make it easier (and safer) to handle the amplifier, which weighs more than 30 pounds. If you have quality speakers & pre-amp to run this, you will lack for nothing in incredible listening pleasure from this power amplifier. This Amp is Perfection in Audio Reproduction. I have personally been completely through the internals of this 555 II power amp, insuring everything is to factory specs. I leave no stone unturned. So you can buy with confidence knowing you are going to receive a very high quality amplifier in perfect condition electronically. This unit (after initial check out on a Sencore PA-81 analyzer) has undergone hours of testing under load, driven by a Carver CD TL3200 music source, into a Harman Kardon 825 pre-amp and pair of Paradigm Esprit B/P 8 ohm 300 w Towers. PLEASE NOTE: When I refurbish a amplifier, I don’t just repair the problem and sell it. I completely disassemble it, meticulously clean everything, (just check the pictures) then I use Deoxit D-5 ® on all connections that needs this process. I make the internals better than new, so that you will have many-many years (min 25) of enjoyment from your new amp, without component failure or component degradation. (Excluding) shorted speaker wires, inferior speakers that can’t handle the power, or turning up the volume to the degree that you can fry eggs on the rear heat sinks. Or blow the windows out in your house. :-) All four electrolytic’s 47uf @160wvdc have been replaced with new Nichicon electrolytic capacitors upgraded to 100 uF 160 wvdc audio grade on the power output PCB’s. Also 4 .I uF 400 polypropylene caps were installed in parallel with the bypass caps.The driver bias voltage was adjusted to 9.5 mV per side.The driver transistors 4 each were upgraded with a higher break down voltage for more headroom.The rail caps have been tested as follows:C1 rated at 15,000 uF and allowable 9,000 uA leakage. Tested 15,100 uF / 300 uA.C2 rated at 15,000 uF and allowable 9,000 uA leakage. Tested 16,700 uf / 360 uA.C3 rated at 15,000 uF and allowable 9,000 uA leakage. Tested 16,300 uF / 350 uA.C4 rated at 15,000 uF and allowable 9,000 uA leakage. Tested 16,600 uF / 310 uA.The S/N# of this unit is 138007521This unit draws .5 amps at 116 VacThe DC offset is .7 mV on the left and .3 mV on the right this is super low, darn near perfect. I have also installed a IEC power receptacle and will come with detachable IEC power cord. This 555 II is bridgeable to operate in mono block mode, just by switching a small switch on the back plate.
