Speeds are constant & accurate on both settings & the Pickup cartridge sounds really good when connected to an amp**** Vintage 1950s Sugden BD1 turntable kit with a Sugden SAU2 tonearm / headshell with a Shure M75ED-2 cartridge. The tonearm 5 point connect wire gives 2 x standard audio connectors output. . 1 spare headshell is also present, as is the original tonearm rest & A4 instruction/spec sheet on this SAU2 tonearm.The turntable has a brand new capsule of Farnells grease & a bottle of thick oil to set this turntable up. I have improved it by the addition of a brand new drive belt & have serviced the motor & made a new suspension harness from vulcanised India rubber, as was there originally rather than a modern nitrile rubber sheet web assembly, to keep to the spirit of things. A spare length of this India rubber is also included with the turntable / tonearm.the motor runs smoothly on both pulley wheel stages & the flip-up corner mounted drive cover is un-split on the hinged area. The black motor board paintwork is around 99%+ present & shows little signs of any scuffing. Not bad for over 75 years old. The motor / turntable also has ALL of its original paperwork including a full size template to fix to a wooden deck.The turntable is heavily cast in Aluminium & the turntable mat is flexible & neither cracked nor perished. This was my main loving room turntable for over 10 years but I've recently switched to a Thorens TD 165 so letting it go. I replaced the motor suspension and drive belt a few years ago though it may be time to replace the latter again. Includes a nice vintage Shure M44MB cart and genuine Shure stylus with plenty of life left. There is a rack at the corner of the lid which can't really be seen if put at the back, otherwise all great condition. Includes phono connector for the SAU-2 tonearm (with ground lead).

This will require new webbing for the motor, a drive belt and a phono connector for the SAU-2 tonearm. I had kept this unit for spares but am now selli gmy BD2 (see other listing) sono lo ger need it. No dustcover.

Sugden Connoisseur Arm SAU2. Working but wants a piece gluing back on headshell (hence tie wrap) Looks ok, no phono cable but internal wiring is fine. Spares or repairs

Connoisseur Sugden SAU-2 Tonearm In Fair Condition. It’s a beautiful arm that I had wanted to install but I don’t have the time. Problems are: - no cable. 5 pin din cable required - the arm lift has had a small crack but it seems to have been glued back - the arm collar screw feels in tight and I can’t undo it. Someone else may have better luck From Vinylengine: The SAU2 is a bit like a classic car : you wouldnt expect it to out-perform todays models, but its great fun to use anyway! Starting at the sharp end, the plastic headshell simply isnt a good design. Its a slide-on friction-fit to the tonearm, and mine was quite loose, cured for now by wrapping a bit of scotch tape round the tonearm shaft but thats hardly a permanent solution. Within the body of the headshell theres a slide-out plug which takes the cartridge leads on pins at one end and plugs into the tonearm at the other. The space enclosing it is so constricted that normal cartridge leads are squashed together and short out. The plug looks eminently meltable so I ruled out soldering leads directly to the pins. I had to source some ultra-thin cartridge clips and make a piece of plastic shielding to fit between them. The slot-holes taking the cartridge mount bolts arent very long, hence not much room for adjustment, and I found it impossible to get a good alignment with some cartridges. At the other end, theres no counterweight calibration dial for the tracking force so it has to be set with a guage or digital scale. The distinctly odd 45-degree offset gimbal arrangement is commendably friction-free and seems to work OK : the trick to getting the headshell to stay horizontal while on the record is to point the outer gimbal at the centre of the playing surface where the needle sets down, and then set the tonearm height so as to be exactly horizontal in the playing position. It does look distinctly strange to see it tilt when you lift it off, though. The anti-skate seems to function as it should, its never an exact science anyway. The base of the tonearm shaft takes a 5-pin male plug which isnt easy to find. I eventually got a suitable Cardas model from e-bay and made up a tonearm lead. Get an SAU2 with a lead if you can! Despite its odd features the SAU2 actually works quite well. I put it through some basic tracks on test records and whilst it didnt excel, it didnt disgrace itself either. Probably a near-match for the Pioneer PL12D tonearm as a reference point. For the music I listen to on a day-to-day basis (fairly mainstream pop/rock/blues/prog/folk from the 60s and 70s) its absolutely fine : I suspect its limitations would become apparent with more demanding classical orchestral music and such-like. It has some character and a nice 50s/60s vintage vibe about it, and Im enjoying using it with an AT91 on a Connoisseur BD1 turntable.
