Connoisseur Sugden SAU-2 Tonearm In Fair Condition. It’s a beautiful arm that I had wanted to install but I don’t have the time. Problems are: - no cable. 5 pin din cable required - the arm lift has had a small crack but it seems to have been glued back - the arm collar screw feels in tight and I can’t undo it. Someone else may have better luck From Vinylengine: The SAU2 is a bit like a classic car : you wouldnt expect it to out-perform todays models, but its great fun to use anyway! Starting at the sharp end, the plastic headshell simply isnt a good design. Its a slide-on friction-fit to the tonearm, and mine was quite loose, cured for now by wrapping a bit of scotch tape round the tonearm shaft but thats hardly a permanent solution. Within the body of the headshell theres a slide-out plug which takes the cartridge leads on pins at one end and plugs into the tonearm at the other. The space enclosing it is so constricted that normal cartridge leads are squashed together and short out. The plug looks eminently meltable so I ruled out soldering leads directly to the pins. I had to source some ultra-thin cartridge clips and make a piece of plastic shielding to fit between them. The slot-holes taking the cartridge mount bolts arent very long, hence not much room for adjustment, and I found it impossible to get a good alignment with some cartridges. At the other end, theres no counterweight calibration dial for the tracking force so it has to be set with a guage or digital scale. The distinctly odd 45-degree offset gimbal arrangement is commendably friction-free and seems to work OK : the trick to getting the headshell to stay horizontal while on the record is to point the outer gimbal at the centre of the playing surface where the needle sets down, and then set the tonearm height so as to be exactly horizontal in the playing position. It does look distinctly strange to see it tilt when you lift it off, though. The anti-skate seems to function as it should, its never an exact science anyway. The base of the tonearm shaft takes a 5-pin male plug which isnt easy to find. I eventually got a suitable Cardas model from e-bay and made up a tonearm lead. Get an SAU2 with a lead if you can! Despite its odd features the SAU2 actually works quite well. I put it through some basic tracks on test records and whilst it didnt excel, it didnt disgrace itself either. Probably a near-match for the Pioneer PL12D tonearm as a reference point. For the music I listen to on a day-to-day basis (fairly mainstream pop/rock/blues/prog/folk from the 60s and 70s) its absolutely fine : I suspect its limitations would become apparent with more demanding classical orchestral music and such-like. It has some character and a nice 50s/60s vintage vibe about it, and Im enjoying using it with an AT91 on a Connoisseur BD1 turntable.

Not sure about the history with this one Was in amongst a job lot of turntables I purchased Has nice oak plinth in good condition , the platter seems to be missing the rubber mat , switch is missing the main on /off lever , motor and internal circuits all present no idea of the condition Great little project if anyone has the time !

For sale a rare beautiful Sudgen CONNOISSEUR turntable dated late 1940s still in perfect condition for its age!This is the rare early Two Speed version in lovely bakelite base!At touch, it rotates smoothly. Matt can be easily replaced to make it shiny as it was 70 years ago! The Sugden Connoisseur comes with a tonearm to be set on the deck.All parts underneath seem to be neat and clean.Due to its age, I did not test this turntable. Bought by me from new about 40 years ago and unused for the last 10 years. These were some of ARs top range speakers when bought. Kept in a pet and smoke free home. Note: these are sold for parts or repair only. Please check the photographs carefully as they show the condition of the bass speakers both will which need replacing. One stud is missing from a speaker grill. The speaker surrounds are in very good condition for their age but have one or two scratches on them - Ive tried to show these in the photos. Note also that one woofer (the one with the perished surround) was replaced many years ago and that different screws to the originals were used in the repair - for reasons I am not clear about. I hadnt noticed at the time as the repair was done elsewhere.
