Transcriptor Hydraulic Reference turntable. This is a David Gammon Transcriptors turntable rather than a JA Michell version. Its previously had a Mission 774 arm fitted to it and the riser for this remains on the armboard. Aftermarket white pads have been applied to the pillars that hold the record. You could remove these and fit new originals if you wish. They are just lightly stuck on. The original lid and hinges are present but the long rod that should go through the hinges to allow the lid to pivot securely is missing. It would not be hard to find or adapt a suitable rod to insert in its place. Bluetak has been applied to pad out the area under the armboard and the earth wiring has been modified. This is probably because the original earth wiring is very flimsy. A final quirk that I havent seen before is that you need to push down when you turn the on off switch to activate the reed switch. I havent seen this type of on/off switch knob fitted to these before. We can ship this turntable worldwide. Updates below as checked manual for info re parts, and turntable plugged in and powers up This was purchased approx 10 years ago from the original first owner It’s a Michell Reference Hydraulic Turntable with Focus Tonearm At the time Michell offered a custom upgrade and this has the non standard platter, there is an identical turntable on ebay at the moment, £1300 Previous owner had it working perfectly however years later and a few home moves it remained unused by me stored in a box, a family member had a look and discovered A; the belt has gone missing so will need replacing B, the metal fluid well that sits underneath the platter (holding the oil I think) previously had the focus platter mounting spindle glued together, see pics 9 and 10, and last two pics, this has now snapped off, so this section will need replacing C, the tonearm was also taken apart and there was a part not put back properly so have a single loose counterweight and ball bearing, so arm is loose Due to the above it’s sold as spares or repairs. The main bearing is manufactured from high-grade aluminum with two pressed fit P.T.F.E bushes at either end of the housing ensuring minimum contact with the bearing spindle, which it self comprises of a silver steel shaft and aluminum hub running on to a ceramic ball bearing. Unused badge, name plate for 1970s Michell Engineering Reference Hydraulic Turntable. Cosmetics are excellent plus, it is indeed unused. It comes as new with peel and stick adhesive on the back. I have only a few of these to offer, it is one of the many parts I personally purchased from John Michell back in 2001 that I will be listing on eBay. Here is a Michell Transcriptors hydraulic reference turntable. This is an earlier example (Transcriptors) with the more conventional feet, rather than the leaf sprung feet introduced by Michell when it took over production. Its this version of the deck that appeared in A Clockwork Orange. This example comes with the desirable squirrel hair sweep brush and stylus brush. It features the distinctive Transcriptor Fluid unipivot arm and is fitted with a basic Ortofon VMS 3E moving magnet cartridge of unknown usage. We have removed the old silicone from the speed adjustment bath under the platter and new silicone is provided for the new owner to install once home. Condition report: This turntable is in good condition, but its not perfect. There are marks here and there, but it generally looks tidy. The lid is complete and does not have any cracks or heavier scratches, but it isnt perfect. Wed describe the lid as very good, but not excellent. When the deck came to us the hydraulic fluid in the tonearm lowering mechanism had leaked out onto the plinth. Weve obviously cleaned this, but its not apparent how to recharge the lowering mechanism with new silicone... as such, it can be used to lift and lower the arm, but does not have the full damping effect you would expect. The motor cover plate was also missing the three original aluminium fixing nuts and weve found some modern ones to use (highlighted in one picture) but originals can be found to replace these should you wish. There was no makers plate on the plinth, and wed found a Transcriptors sticker which weve positioned in the correct position. It looks fine, but a new owner looking for originality might want to replace it and these can be found online. In use: We have set-up the tonearm and played this deck and, apart from speed fine tuning because of the lack of silicone in the bath under the platter, it is running well and consistently. The cartridge sounds OK but wed expect most new owners to replace this in due course. Summary: The Transcriptor decks look fantastic, and this is no exception. But they are also decks that require fettling and an enthusiastic owner who is prepared to understand how they work and make the necessary adjustments to optimise performance. We would not recommend them to someone with limited experience and knowledge. This deck is working and can be enjoyed, but we also think it could be taken to the next level of authenticity and performance by someone looking for a project. We do not have any original packaging for this deck and, due to the delicate nature of so many of the parts, we will not send via courier under any circumstance. This is strictly collection only. However, we do also drive around the country quite a bit, so may be able to deliver or meet you somewhere, but please ask whether this might be possible before you buy.
