Michell Orbe 3 Speed Turntable Created by John Michell, designer of the space ship Discovery for the film 2001 – Space Odyssey, this is one of the finest - and best looking - turntables ever built. We just replaced its AC motor with a brand new DC motor and controller, purchased directly from Michell Engineering. This means that the turntable is now capable of playing at 78 as well as 33.33 & 45 rpm speeds, and a 78rpm pulley is included. (That being said, one would also need to purchase a cartridge with a 78rpm stylus in order to play 78s.) The Orbe is fitted with a Series V SME tonearm and a Benz Micro Reference moving coil cartridge, which has been completely rebuilt by Steve & Ray Leung at Vinyl Audio Science. This turntable is in very good condition and comes in a black acrylic/metal finish. There are a few scratches on the black acrylic base plate which are hardly noticeable under the clear acrylic perspex that sits on it. Also, one small nick at the centre of the platter which cannot be seen when the record clamp is in place (see photos). It was manufactured in 2014 and the serial number is 295. The current retail price is £5,500. Unfortunately we do not have the original packaging but will make sure it is secure for delivery purposes.
