sold here is my much loved B780. I had coveted it for eons and luckily, some five years ago, I found this example. it was sold to me by a very kind and knowledgeable couple from oxfordshire who ran a hi-fi shop, had recently retired and were downsizing. this was the kernel of their home system. they stated it was perfectly functional, cannot remember if they had it serviced but it has served me flawlessly ever since. the only issue it has is a slight tonal imbalance when the tone defeat button is pressed, a couple of repeated pressings and away it goes. I did not molest it in whatsoever way. cosmetic condition is excellent for a unit of that age (the mid eighties) aside of the notorious nextel paint, which presents its usual self after all these years. all leds are working correctly. this was my desktop system for said five years or so and in daily use. it blew me away for its smoothness and clarity. absolutely non fatiguing listening. it has been compared to tube sound but cannot confirm that: not having proper tube knowledge to speak of to begin with, plus I suspect that the tube-like sound tag is often strapped to SS equipment just for the sake of embellishing the unit for sale. I could go on for longer than you might desire about the prestige and the benchmark factor of anything vintage revox: this was the studio equipment gear of choice back in the day and chances are most of your (if you started your listening adventure at the time of vinyl, like me) favourite albums were recorded on studer revox equipment (pretty much anything bar speakers, of course, which were tannoys most of the time). this is the (successful) blend of two (very successful) units, the B750 amp and the B760 tuner, an almost untouchable duo back then. the tuner section of this machine is still jaw-dropping by today’s standards, alongside the phono stage (certainly thanks to the combination of a Revox B 795 deck + Ortofon MC cart and Ortofon MC step up transformer!) headphone stage also proved blissful with a pair of beyer DT 880 cans. Let me wax lyrical a little longer about the FM section: if an average tuner sounds decidedly better than digital radio you can only try to fathom what it means listening to Bbc radio three on this. in sum, one of the best receivers ever made, decidedly different from its bombastic looking, japanese competitors of the era. I am selling it not without regret only because of the restless upgrading bug.
