As per the date code stamped on the magnet’s edge, this woofer was manufactured on August 18, 1972.As you may know, FISHER purchased their drivers from two main sources back then, Gefco (EIA source code 1056, always stamped in red) and United Speaker Systems (USS) of New Jersey which was not an EIA member. This woofer was manufactured for FISHER by USS, a family company still in operation today making Phase Tech speakers. Please see my large photos and read the remaining description to decide if this capable FISHER bass driver is correct for your needs. This FISHER 12” woofer is in clean, very good condition. It has a sturdy textured paper cone that is structurally sound with no holes or cracks and the large textile voice coil dustcap has never been harmed. Plus, the black-enameled steel basket has no dents or scratches, just a hint of surface rust in spots. Most importantly, the aged original polyurethane foam suspension was just replaced with a quality polyether surround that has the correct “flat-attach” profile. The main drawback to most U.S. and foreign-made speakers from the early 1970’s to mid 1990’s was the use of foam for the woofer surrounds. Though foam offers excellent cone excursion, it invariably rots and/or disintegrates in 12-20 years no matter what climate you live in. This woofer was no exception—the surround had fallen apart years ago. Some of you have replaced woofer surrounds before, so you know that it’s a time-consuming process that takes a great deal of patience and a steady hand.
