Power amp seems to work fine, but the preamp does not pass any signal. Unit has obvious water damage as seen on the top of the cabinet and on the preamp section of the circuit board. I dont recommend trying to fix this but it can be used as a power amp going directly into the power amp inputs. Or, it can be used for parts such as controls, switches, knobs, front panel, etc. And cosmetics are actually pretty good. The top cabinet could be sanded and painted of course. The front panel looks pretty good with no obvious splits or cracks.

This NAD 3020 Series 20 Version 1 Amplifier arrived with blown fuses due to shorted driver and output transistors in one of the Power Amp channels. I have replaced the driver and output transistor pairs of BOTH channels with matched quad sets so that both channels are electrically identical. The Output Transistors have been mounted with ceramic thermal washers that do not require grease. They look much better, too. The Power Supply caps have all been upgraded from 35V to 50V nichicon, Rubycon, Chemicon and Panasonic. The 4 Main caps are 50V nichicon FW Gold. The Phono Preamp input caps are nichicon MUSE Bipolar. The other audio caps have been upgraded to nichicon Fine Gold and ELNA. Ive upgraded the Power Switch to a hefty 7 amp version which should last forever. I have also upgraded the Power Amp Offset adjustments to multi-turn trimmers which are more precise and less likely to drift. I have re-soldered the rear RCA and DIN jacks, the front switches, controls, and headphone jack, and much of the main board itself. I then cleaned the solder side with Flux Remover and Alcohol. It looks better than new. Cosmetically, this unit is is excellent condition but with minor scratches on top. Please see photos. It is the ONLY 3020 version without the series muting FETs known for their Welcome Hum and other various distortions. AFAIK, this is also the version with the mystical layout artwork error that improves the sound quality ??? Please advise. Version 1 can be identified by the separate Power Supply board mounted on the back panel, the Power transformer mounted on a bottom plate, and the 4 Main Caps located in the front left of the circuit board. FWIW, the later 3020 Series 20 Version 2 had a 6 transistor phono preamp and the 4 transistor control preamp topology used thereafter. The 3020A and thereafter then settled on a 4 transistor phono preamp, including a low noise version for MC cartridges on some units.

Fantastic original condition, and sounds great. Performs as it should, all functions work properly. Controls are smooth and quiet, no dead spots or scratchiness. Power light and power meter lights all function properly. Never abused, belonged to an elderly gentleman that was an audio equipment fanatic and collector. Hard to find, especially in this condition! Used D 3020 - great amp . Pulled from a working system. Everything works but there are a few notes. The OPT 1 input light is faint but that input works. It was the main input I used 85% of the time so maybe that light has faded over time. The remote feels sticky and the body of the amp is a little tacky feeling. I looked it up and certain types of rubber companys use are prone to this problem. A Miele vacuum I have exhibits this kinda aging. It does not affect operation but it is something to note. Comes with main amp, remote, power cable and original box . No returns.

Deoxit switches and potentiometers. Resolder RCA, DIN, and Headphone jacks as needed to reseat and resecure them, along with any other questionable solder joints. Re Cap - Replace the Electrolytic Capacitors in the Power Supplies, Amplifier sections, and Tuner Audio sections. Ill upgrade the audio caps with nichicon, ELNA, Rubycon, and Panasonic audio grades while preferring 105C and/or higher voltage rated caps for the power supplies. I can also install any capacitors that you provide as desired. Note that replacing the power switch is an additional $35. If you hear a sizzling sound as you slowly push it on or off, then its time to replace it. International units at 220VAC are no problem. This unit was in need of a new Power Switch and a new set of Muting FETs. It is otherwise all original except as upgraded below; I have updated the mute ON/OFF circuitry to match that of the 3225PE. See last photo. This allowed me to replace the original 3 Amp Power switch with a more robust 7 Amp switch that should last forever. I have upgraded all of the Electrolytic Capacitors. The Power Supply caps are nichicon, Chemicon, and Panasonic. The Phono Preamp and Control Preamp audio caps are ELNA. The Phono Input coupling caps are ELNA SILMIC II Bipolar. The Power Amp caps are nichicon Gold. For added versatility, I have repurposed the (fixed line level) Tape Output RCA Jacks to be the (variable level) Preamp Outputs suitable for a powered Subwoofer, external Power Amp, etc. They are equivalent to the Preamp Outputs on the 3225PE which allows this unit to be used as a Preamp only. Cosmetically, this unit is in great shape inside and out except for a bunch of marks on the top/side cover. Please see photos. Feel free to message me with any questions, corrections, comments, etc. ******* Chapter Two ******* Whenever I acquire an NAD 3220PE with all of the original Power Amp transistors intact, I prefer to preserve and protect them by removing two fuses to disable the PE Supply, effectively re-configuring the unit as a 3020e. This reduces the Main Rails to 60V and more accurately emulates the operation and performance of the iconic 3020 Power Amp section while also staying within the specified safe area of the output transistors, making them less likely to fail. While this does reduce the specified IHF Dynamic Power, I have compensated somewhat on this unit by Beefing_Up the RMS Performance with upgraded Main Caps, going up from 4700uf to 6800uf Chemicon. Ill also be happy to reinstall the fuses on request.

And the complementary Visio HP-50 headphones. I used the D3020 in a table top near-field listening area with small speakers...with the option of using the HP 50 headphones. The unique design is a stand out, and is a welcome change from all-the-same black amp boxes. Headphone review: The goal of the HP 50 headphone is to convey the same feeling as when listening to speakers. The sound character is warm, cozy and the sound is open. The bass really fills in the bottom, but without dominating the sound. Cymbals, brass instruments and voices can sound a tad intrusive when listening loud on many headphones, but not here. The headphones come with an extra cable that has an inline control that will communicate with your Apple devices. Take full control of your music with a simple touch of the 3-button multi-click remote. NOTE: The original D 3020 used a matte black rubber material on the sides of the unit. These were prone to wear and soon became scratched, scraped and sticky. This unit was professionally resurfaced to eliminate the rubber sticky surface material. It now sports a hard, smooth satin black surface. Headphones have some surface wear on edges of cups. Nothing that will show up in photographs. Moderate use in smoke/pet free environment. Sat in the loft for the best part of 30 years,we done a small recommissioning and shes all good! Sounds perfect. Probably the first time its been powered up I say! Look inside the unit, its brand new!!! Happy to post but then who wants some idiot to throw it in the back of a transit and destroy it.
