Over the years, we have used a variety of speakers with our equipment as the on board speakers are rarely of such a quality that allows for pleasant listening over a long period of time. Some of the manufacturers did offer accessory speakers to improve the rather thin sound coming from their communications equipment. Drake offered the MS8 to complement its line of high end consumer receivers and it does make a noticeable difference with improved audio. This MS8 is used and in beautiful condition looking nearly new in appearance. Please refer to our pictures for specifics on cosmetics. Operationally the speaker works just wonderfully with no buzzing or other distortion. Most people are not aware that the line of Drake R8 series receivers have a wonderful audio circuit. In fact, as good as this MS8 sounds, a larger speaker can sound even better. However, this speaker matches the R8 series in appearance, is reasonably small, and is a good compromise between the need for good copy on weak signals and improved sound for listening. It comes with a 1/4 plug that conveniently snaps into a socket on the rear of the receiver. You then move the speaker selector switch on the rear panel to external and are able to enjoy the improved sound in less than 30 seconds....no muss, no fuss. This VHF module would appeal to the buyer wanting a top unit electronically. If you own one of the famed Drake R8, R8A or R8B receivers, then you have one of the better consumer receivers ever made and one of the most flexible with regards to capabilities. However, this receiver can be further enhanced with the VHF converter that allows the user to pick up the additional frequencies of 35 to 55 MHz and of 108 to 174 MHz. These frequencies are additional public service, aeronautical, weather, and amateur frequencies that greatly expand the strengths of the Drake. Originally RL Drake offered this feature for an additional cost of $269. This converter is no longer available and is much sought after. The one we are selling here has been used, but is in good operational condition and was tested and was working perfectly when recently removed from the receiver. Please note that earlier versions had many more components and that this later VHF unit has taken the dozens of individual components and consolidated them into a few ICs. The advantage of this is that there is less likelihood for components to fall out of tolerance or to fail. The ICs are durable and should withstand the effects of age better than the earlier boards utilizing individual capacitors, transistors, resistors, etc. The ensemble includes the VHF module, the connector cables, and mounting directions. Installation should take about 45 minutes and does not require solder, only a Phillips head screwdriver and the ability to read and follow the installation directions.
